Inseparable from your Palm Pilot? Now you can insure it — or any other personal digital assistant (PDA), handheld computer, or organizer — with coverage from The Signal, a wireless-equipment insurer.

For $4 to $5 per month in premium, the coverage will replace your PDA should it vanish or suffer irreparable damage. The coverage kicks in after you've paid the $35 deductible and it pays up to $650. You will not be reimbursed for the value of lost data, though, so make sure to back up your data. Accessories and peripheral devices also are excluded from the coverage.

Included with the coverage is data protection software and membership in the "PDA Gold Club," which offers discounts at the online retailer PalmsLostOrStolen.com, which sells The Signal's coverage and palm-related products.

To make a claim on the coverage if your PDA is lost or stolen, you'll need to report your loss to The Signal via telephone and to mail a police report to the insurer within 90 days. If the PDA is damaged, you'll need the original bill of sale showing the make, model, and serial number to be covered for a replacement.
