In Alabama, what is the penalty for not having auto insurance when you get stopped by the police?
Maria, Alabama
Dear Maria,
In Alabama, you are required to purchase liability limits of $20,000 per person, $40,000 per accident for bodily injury, and $10,000 per accident for property damage.
If you are found not to have this coverage, you may be subject to a $500 fine for the first offense, and a $1,000 fine and/or license suspension for six months for the second offense. Fraudulent use of an insurance card may bring a fine ranging from $500 to $5,000 and/or possible jail time of one to 10 years.
