Can my boyfriend drive my car in emergency situations if he has no auto insurance?
Jill, New Jersey
Dear Jill,
Most insurance policies cover you or anyone whom you give permission to drive your car, meaning your boyfriend would likely be covered. However, auto insurance policies vary by company. You may want to check with your auto insurer to see if your boyfriend would be covered.
Keep in mind that when you let someone else drive your car, you take on the risk of their driving habits as well. If your boyfriend was to get into an accident and was found at fault, your policy would pay for the damages, but your premiums may increase as a result of the crash.
