I hold the title to a vehicle, but another person is the primary driver. Whose name should be on the auto insurance policy?
Dear Ryan,
Jane Kovacik, senior examiner for the Wisconsin Department of Insurance, says that as the owner of the vehicle, your name should be on the insurance policy. That's because you cannot insure anything that does not pose a financial risk for you.
However, if someone else is going to be the primary driver to the vehicle, you should add his or her name to the policy. The premium you pay on the policy will be based on your respective driving histories. If you neglect to tell your insurer that another person is going to be the primary driver, the insurance company may either cancel or non-renew your policy.
