Are passengers in my vehicle covered from injuries if I just have liability insurance?
Dear Greg,
No. Liability insurance only pays for bodily injury and property damage expenses that you cause to a third party in an auto accident. It is required in all states except New Hampshire, Tennessee, and Wisconsin.
Personal injury protection (PIP) or medical payments coverage (MedPay) pays for injuries to you and your passengers if you are in an accident. You are required to buy PIP or MedPay if you live in a "no-fault" state, meaning that your insurance company pays for damages to your vehicle, regardless of whether you or another driver are found at fault.
