My 15-year-old son was a passenger in a car that was rear-ended. My personal injury protection (PIP) is covering the medical expenses. The medical bills totaled $2,000. What is a fair amount to expect for his personal injury claim?

Dear Maryann,
A personal injury settlement should pay for any medical expenses and ongoing physical therapy or medication that is needed, any lost wages your son sustained as a result of the crash, and any pain and suffering he experienced in the accident.
If your son does not need any ongoing therapy or medication, did not miss any time from work from a part-time job (if he has one), and does not experience any serious pain and suffering, you shouldn't expect more than $2,000 for your reimbursement. However, if he has experienced serious pain and suffering, you should consult an attorney because consumers rarely know the value of pain and suffering claims.
