How to contact your insurance company

Are you trying to reach your insurance company? Perhaps you need to make a claim or want to clarify some details about your current policy.

Contact your insurance companyYou should be able to get the insurer's contact information from many sources.

  • Insurance policy documents: After purchasing your policy, the insurer probably mailed you a packet of documents with coverage details, including what's known as a declarations page. Somewhere in those documents -- probably on the front page -- you should find a contact phone number.
  • Insurance ID card: If you have auto insurance, you were issued an ID card that you must carry with you -- either in your wallet or somewhere inside your car -- in case you are stopped by the police and asked for proof of insurance. That card should contain your insurance company's phone number and/or your agent's number.
  • Insurance company website: Visiting your insurance company's website should turn up your insurer's phone number and a way to contact the insurer via the Web. Look for a link on the page that says "Contact Us" or something similar. Also, it's possible that you registered on the website to set up your own individual electronic account. If so, your policy documents may be available in digital form online.
  • State department of insurance: If all else fails, it may be time to call your state department of insurance and ask if someone there can find your insurer's contact information. Insure.com’s state pages have insurance department contact information.
