How can we provide health insurance for our kids when we can't afford to pay the premiums?
Your kids might be eligible for health insurance through a joint federal-state program called the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP).
SCHIP is designed to provide coverage for children whose parents, for whatever reason, can't afford health insurance but make too much money to qualify for existing welfare programs. SCHIP is funded by matching federal and state funds and administered by each state separately. Benefits and income-eligibility requirements vary by state. All 50 states and the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands have SCHIP plans for children.
