Ask the Home Insurance Expert
I drove my car into my garage door and part of the house. Is there any coverage between policies? I realize I did it to myself so I thought I might not be covered.
The thing about insurance is that it often covers us for our own dumb mistakes – hammering a nail into our own thumb (health insurance), leaving our car unlocked and having it stolen (comprehensive coverage) and driving through our own garage door (home insurance).
The damage to your house should be covered by your home insurance. The damage to your car should be covered your collision insurance – I hope you have collision coverage. Deductibles will apply.
Your auto liability can’t cover you in this case because you can’t make a liability claim against yourself.
