Ask the Home Insurance Expert

I forgot to pay my homeowner's policy and the due date was yesterday, do I still have coverage today?

It depends on the insurer, but if there’s any grace period it’s likely short, like 10 days.

Typically there is not a grace period required by law for home or auto insurance policies.  There may be notice of cancellation required by state laws; however, in many cases state laws allow that to be part of your bill.

I recommend that you contact your homeowners insurance provider immediately to see if it offers a grace period.  If it doesn’t, then ask what you can to do to reinstate your policy now that it has lapsed.
