We switched home insurance brokers after refinancing in April of this year. Despite informing my former broker to cancel our policy, no refund for the balance has been sent — this despite several requests. Who do I approach to assist us in obtaining the refund due, which is around $600?
Kevin, California
Dear Kevin,
You should call the California Department of Insurance. You can find the department's address, phone number, and a link to its Web site on our main California page.
Did you inform the broker or insurance company in writing that you were canceling the policy? This is usually required when you cancel a policy.
You may also want to call your former insurance company directly about the refund. This might yield more answers than calling your former broker.
