I had a grease fire in my kitchen several days ago. Is is best to allow the contractor recommended by the insurance adjuster to handle all the necessary repairs or should I find my own contractor?

Dear Janet,
Many insurance agencies have contractors that they do business with on a regular basis, but you are under no obligation to use that person as your contractor. You can always opt to hire someone of your own choosing to make repairs. In fact, it's generally best to use someone you know and trust.
In addition, you can hire a public claims adjuster. For more information, take a look at our story on how Public claims adjusters can level the playing field for you.
