I purchased a new renters insurance policy last spring. When I applied for coverage, I indicated "no dogs" on the application. This Christmas we purchased a Dachshund puppy.
Do I have to notify my carrier that we now have a dog? If so, can they raise my rates or drop me at renewal because we now own a dog?

Dear Steve,
Insurance companies always recommend that you let them know whenever you have a change in your risk, and that includes adding a dog to your household.
A spokesperson for your insurance company, Nationwide, says that the company does not impose a surcharge for dogs. So you shouldn't expect to see your rates go up if you notify them.
On the other hand, if your dog bites people and you file an insurance claim, you may have to agree to an exclusion clause for the dog in order to keep your home insurance.
Nationwide is also one of many insurance companies that will not insure certain breeds of dogs who have a reputation for biting. Dachshunds are not on that list, but Rottweilers and pit bulls are.
We have several stories that should help provide some background and direction on the subject. Look at , Home insurance for dog lovers, and Breeds that bite and preventive measures.
