My son wants to purchase a go-ped (motorized scooter). Is liability arising out of the use of the go-ped covered under my homeowners policy?
Lance, New Jersey
Dear Lance,
Jayna Neagle, a spokesperson for the Insurance Information Institute, says the possibility of homeowners coverage boils down to one thing: Will you need to register it and/or get a license to operate the scooter?
If you do need to register it or if you need a license to operate it, the go-ped won't be covered by your home insurance. You'll need to get separate motor vehicle coverage in that case. Covering it on your current auto policy is one option you can look into.
However, if you don't need registration or a license to operate it, you should be covered under a typical homeowners policy.
