My homeowners policy is being canceled because of repairs that need to be done to my home which will be very difficult to complete in the one month before coverage is terminated. What can I do to get coverage while I make the repairs?

Dear Jack,

Johnny Johnson of the consumer affairs division in the Alabama Department of Insurance says that you need to shop around for new coverage. Check with several agents and explain your situation. Showing proof that the needed repairs are underway will go a long way toward allaying the fears that a prospective insurer might have.

If the disrepair is bad enough, Johnson says that you might have a lot of trouble finding an insurer until the repairs are finished. Unfortunately, Alabama doesn't have an "insurer of last resort" for you to go to.
