Marriage and companionship

secrets to long life

People with good romantic relationships often live longer than singles and unhappy couples, says Margaret King, director of The Center for Cultural Studies & Analysis in Philadelphia. She asserts that your choice of life partner is the strongest indicator of future happiness and perhaps the most important decision you will ever make.

Discussing day-to-day problems with a spouse or an intimate companion "is part of our psychic needs package," she says. Without a close confidant, "we are alone in our heads."

Many people seek life insurance quotes in order to provide for the spouse they may leave behind when they die. Finding the right life partner isn't easy. People typically choose spouses who are very different than themselves. While differences can spark the initial attraction, they also can lead to conflict over time. "Opposites do attract," King says. "However, day to day, that becomes problematic. Good luck trying to navigate that all the time."

Today's seniors have a renewed interest in love and romance, King says. "You can stay in the game for much longer. You can have romance."
