Ask the Life Insurance Expert

If I have a life insurance policy on my husband through my employer will they still pay out if he dies and we are divorced at the time?

If you are not yet divorced, then the policy should still be good and thus allow you to collect on the life insurance policy if your estranged spouse dies.

However, if you’re divorced it’s a different story.  Group life insurers typically require you to cancel your spousal policy within 30 days of your divorce.  Some policies terminate immediately as of the date of the divorce.

If you wanted to get an individual life insurance policy on your ex-husband, you would need to show insurable interest and he would have to consent to it.
