Does a wife have the right to know who the beneficiary is on her husband's life insurance policies if the policies are solely in his name?
Melinda, West Virginia
Dear Melinda,
No, individuals who are not party to a life insurance contract — that is, who are not the policyowner or the insured — have no rights to policy information. If you are not one of those people, the life insurance company will not share any information about the policy in question.
Although it may seem strange that a wife would not be entitled to know about her husband's life insurance if her name is not on the policy as co-insured or a joint policyowner, she has no right to any information about it or to make any changes to the life insurance policy, says the West Virginia Insurance Commission.
