If a person is named as a beneficiary, is that person responsible for paying for the funeral of the deceased? Or, is it just a moral obligation?
Barbara, Virginia
Dear Barbara,
The beneficiary of a life insurance policy is legally free to do whatever they wish with the death benefit.
However, some people purchase "preneed" insurance, also known as burial or funeral insurance, specifically to cover their final expenses. For more information on funeral insurance, please read Tips for buying pre-need and final expense insurance.
