How can I look up a company to see if a policy is still good if they are no longer listed as doing business in my state?

Question:
I found some old life insurance policies in my father's house. I didn't recognize the names of any of the companies. How can I look up a company to see if a policy is still good if they are no longer listed as doing business in my state?

Hank, Texas

Answer:
The Department of Insurance (DOI) in the state where the policy was purchased should know what happened to the company; it may have been bought by another insurer, changed its name, or gone out of business.

The DOI can help you locate the policy. You can find contact information by choosing the state in which you live from Insure.com's "Insurance in your state" menu at the top of every Insure.com page.
