Progressive says it was the first to offer immediate-response vehicles that are dispatched to claims locations. It was also the first to offer “concierge” service, which streamlines the car-repair process for customers. Almost all of the Progressive customers surveyed (96 percent) said they plan to renew. Today the company is also known for its aggressive foray into pay-as-you-drive car insurance, with its Snapshot program. The insurer is based in Mayfield Village, Ohio.

GEICO’s gecko is a well-known corporate mascot.  Tyipically GEICO spends a great deal on advertising, yet only 2 percent of customers we surveyed say they chose GEICO because of a TV commercial. Forty percent say that GEICO offered them the best price. Notably, 91 percent of customers say they plan to renew.

MetLife scored five stars for “value for price” in our survey, and 23 percent of customers surveyed say they chose MetLife because of the price.  Another 43 percent said they chose MetLife after seeing a commercial.  An impressive 69 percent said they plan to renew with MetLife Auto. It’s the largest personal lines insurer that is publicly traded. The company is based in Northbrook, Illinois. Notably, a quarter of customers we surveyed say they chose Allstate because of its reputation, another thirty percent said they chose Allstate due to it offering the best price.  Allstate has announced it joined a consortium to develop drones, which the insurer would use for home inspections and claims adjusting.

The company scored 4.5 stars in “value for price,” claims processing and customer service.  A number of surveyed customers, 78 percent, said they would recommend Farmers to others, and 86 percent said they plan to renew with Farmers.  Farmers offers a car-shopping service with guaranteed prices and introduced its first coverage for customers who offer ridesharing in January 2015 in Colorado. The insurer is based in Woodland Hills, California.

Coverage Options
Usage-based. Rates can be based on your mileage and how you drive.
Accident forgiveness. Your rates won't increase after your first accident.
Vanishing deductible. Your deductible will be reduced as long as you have no accidents or moving violations.
New car replacement. If you total your car the insurer will pay for a new car.
Pet injury coverage. Pays vet bills for dogs or cats injured in a crash (up to specificed limits).
Re-key coverage. Pays for lock replacement if your keys are stolen.
Lock in your rate. Locks in your rate year after year, even if you have a claim.
No-drop promise. Your policy will be renewed even if you have accidents and traffic violations.
Waiver of deductible for not at-fault accident. You won't have to pay your collision deductible if an accident wasn't your fault.
Offers 12-month policies. Your policy term can be one year before the next renewal.
Mobile app. The insurer offers an app for smartphones.

What's never covered
Even if you have full coverage auto insurance, which typically means that you buy liability, collision and comprehensive coverage, your policy may not cover every disaster that comes your way.

For example, say your car won't start in the morning. Don't bother calling your car insurance company. An auto insurance policy won't cover car trouble, but many insurers offer "mechanical breakdown" coverage as an add-on.

If your car is stolen, comprehensive insurance will cover the value of the vehicle - but not your belongings inside. Your homeowners or renters insurance would cover the theft of your personal items, minus your homeowners or renters deductible.

Intentional acts won't be covered by your auto policy, either. For example, say you break your car window in order to get your keys out. Be ready to pay for your own glass replacement.

You can end up voiding your coverage through other actions. For example, making significant modifications to your vehicle could void coverage. Driving other people around for Uber likely isn't covered by your personal auto policy, nor is using your car for business, like delivering pizzas.

And if you have specifically "excluded" a driver from your policy, make sure they never find your car keys. A crash caused by an excluded driver is never covered.
Methodology

Insure.com commissioned Op4G to survey more than 4,000 insurance customers nationwide in June 2015. The survey collected customer ratings for 20 large companies in the auto category and 15 large companies each in the home, health and life categories. Only current customers of the insurers on our lists were surveyed and the survey was not open to the general public on the Insure.com website.

Respondents answered questions about their levels of satisfaction with their insurers, and each answer was assigned a point value. Points were then averaged and totaled for each company. The companies with the three highest scores in each category earned Insure.com's "People's Choice Award."

The A.M. Best ratings noted in the survey do not affect the scores, but are provided as a supplementary resource. The "discounts" and "coverage options" for auto insurance carriers also do not affect the scores.
