I'm with Stupid! Insurance for celebrity dummies

  • Last updated: Feb. 10, 2010

Fortunately for some, stupidity and dimwitted behavior are not listed as exclusions in insurance policies.  Many losses due to bad judgment or knuckleheaded behavior are covered by insurance.

[Let Insure.com help you find affordable car insurance now.]

That’s good news for some celebrities who land in the spotlight for their foolish behavior – see below!

I left my keys in my car – and it was stolen!
Charlie Sheen’s laziness recently led him to lose his car. The actor’s Mercedes was reported stolen from his open garage and later found wrecked in a ravine near his home.  Sheen made the job easy for the thieves by leaving his garage door open and his keys in the ignition.

If Sheen has comprehensive coverage on his car insurance policy, it will pay for the damage to his car due to theft. In fact, he would have been covered even if he left his car running.

I lost my bag in these here dumpsters.
If actor Nick Nolte bought an endorsement to his home insurance policy for the bag that he recently lost, his insurance would have covered the loss. The actor was caught on video digging through trash cans in Venice Beach in search of a bag that he said contained Xanax and beer. Unfortunately, even if Nolte had an endorsement for the bag, it would not cover the loss of his Xanax and beer. Or his sanity.

I broke into a bank because I thought it was my house!
Memo to Rip Torn: Home insurance does not cover places you think are your home. The “Men in Black” actor was so drunk recently that he broke into a bank through a window, thinking it was his home. According to news reports, Torn took off his hat and boots at the door and later asked police why they were taking him out of his house.

The bank’s policy will likely pay for the repairs.

I drank and I crashed.

This could be a tale told by numerous celebrities. David Hasselhoff's ex-wife, Pamela Bach, got into legal trouble as a result of two DUI charges last year.  In one of the incidents, Bach was sued after drunkenly slamming into another car and injuring the other driver. While your car insurance will not pay for legal expenses associated with your DUI charge, it will cover your legal bills and damages if someone sues you for the damages you cause – up to the limits of your policy. Your collision coverage would pay for repairs to your own car.

But you can be sure that your car insurance rates will go through the roof after this claim. In fact, your insurance company is likely drop you if you’ve been convicted of a DUI and you may have to seek insurance in your state’s “high risk” pool. If this happens, be prepared to pay big bucks to keep yourself insured.

My cosmetic surgery didn’t turn out so hot.

If your cosmetic surgery makes you look worse than when you went in, be prepared to pay for the fixes yourself. Tara Reid, infamous for plastic surgery gone wrong, could have the best health plan around, but health insurance doesn’t pay for cosmetic surgery, and it won’t pay for reversals or fixes. However, if you land in the hospital due to a medical complication from the surgery, like an infection, your health insurance kicks in.

I left my key under my doormat – and someone used it to break into my home!
Members of a teenage crime ring, who burglarized the home of heiress Paris Hilton in 2008, recently claimed that they targeted her home after they pegged her as "dumb" because she left the key to her $4 million mansion under her doormat. The teens, most of whom have been recently charged with burglary, reportedly stole more than $2 million in cash, clothes, jewelry and art. The gang also claimed to have found cocaine in Hilton’s home.

The good news is that home insurance covers items lost in a theft, even if you left your key under your mat or your door unlocked. However, a  standard home insurance policy defines the maximum amount of money you would receive for specific items. For example, a standard policy pays out up to $1,500 for jewelry and $200 for cash. These limits vary by insurance company, but it’s unlikely Hilton has recouped all of her expenses unless she had additional coverage for these items.  If you have a $50,000 piece of jewelry, you should purchase an endorsement for it. As for cocaine, insurance will not reimburse you for illegal drugs.
