Ask the Car Insurance Expert

I am divorced. My daughter is insured under her mom’s policy. I have an extra car that her mom will not put in her name but she wants our daughter to have the car. Can the car be insured on my policy if it predominantly parked in someone else’s driveway and driven by my daughter who is covered on her mom’s policy.

That’s probably not going to work out. She’s not insured under her mom’s policy when she’s driving your car – she’s insured under yours. Insurance follows the car, not the driver. And your insurer will not like having the car “garaged” at someone else’s house when your rates are based on your address.

The easiest solution would be for the mom to take the title. There’s more information in our story on insuring  a car you don’t own.
