Auto Insurance: Frequently asked questions

Question:

I locked my keys in my car while it was running and decided to break the door window to get back inside. I thought this should be covered under something other than collision coverage, but my auto insurance company is denying the claim. It says this was an intentional act. I cannot find an "intentional acts exclusion" under the physical-damage part of my car insurance policy. Why is my claim not covered?

Answer:

You are right that there is no "intentional acts exclusion" under the coverage for damage on your personal auto policy. However, your car insurance policy applies to "direct and accidental loss" to your car. This was a direct loss, but it was not accidental. You intentionally broke your door window. Your actions may have been understandable or even necessary, but they were also intentional. Therefore, it is not covered by your car insurance policy.
