If my rental car is damaged, will my personal auto policy or my rental car insurance policy pay out first? If one policy doesn't cover all the damage, does the other supplement it?
First, if you have personal car insurance, the type of coverage you bought, along with its deductibles, usually applies to rental cars as well. So if you already have comprehensive and collision insurance for your own car, don't duplicate coverage you already have by buying rental car insurance. But, if you've decided to purchase rental car insurance — in addition to your personal auto policy — the rental car insurance will pay out first. If the damage exceeds your rental car coverage limits, your personal policy kicks in. Many personal policies state that your collision insurance is "excess" to any other coverage.
Here are the basics of rental car insurance.
