Ask the Car Insurance Expert
I do not own a vehicle but my son recently got his permit. How do I get him insured?
You don’t insure him. He’ll be insured by the policy that covers whatever car he drives. Insurance follows the vehicle, not the driver, so you can’t buy auto insurance “on” your son.
If he’s taking a driving course, he’d be insured by the driver-training company’s policy. If he drives his grandmother’s car, he’d be insured under her policy. And so on.
