The American Automobile Association (AAA) is most famous for its 24-hour emergency road service and its helpful guides and maps. However, AAA is one of the oldest companies in America that sells auto insurance.
AAA was founded March 4, 1902, in Chicago to lobby for improved roads and safer driving conditions. That year horses way outnumbered cars -- 17 million to 23,000. Still, motoring enthusiasts across the country formed 50 small motor clubs. Nine of them joined together to create a national motoring organization shortly after the turn of the 20th century.
Today AAA is made up of hundreds of individual automobile clubs. A non-profit service organization, AAA's national headquarters are in Heathrow, Fla.
Looking for ways to help its members, AAA began selling its auto insurance policies in 1948.
AAA auto insurance is only available to its members. If you want to buy your auto insurance from AAA, you must contact the club that serves your region. However, AAA doesn't provide auto insurance in all states.
AAA offers many discounts to drivers for a number of reasons, including anti-theft devices and safety features, good driving records and driver training for students and seniors.
In addition to auto insurance, AAA offers motorcraft and watercraft insurance, and other types of insurance.
