The Hartford home insurance garnered 5 out of 5 stars for “value for price” in our best home insurance companies survey. The Hartford earned 4.5 stars for customer service and claims service to obtain an overall score of 88.1 and 4.5 stars. Notably, 96 percent of The Hartford home insurance policyholders surveyed say they plan on renewing their policy and over three-fourths say they would recommend the insurer to a friend. Senior homeowners may recognize The Hartford as being the provider of homeowners insurance through the AARP.

Historic beginnings

Being around as long as they have, the Hartford has some incredible historical bragging rights. In 1825, they were the first insurance company to cover an institution of higher learning – Yale University. In 1861, President Abraham Lincoln bought a fire insurance policy from the Hartford to keep his home and property in Illinois safe. Interestingly enough, Robert E. Lee, who would lead the Confederate Army during the Civil War, also bought a home insurance policy from The Hartford for his property in Virginia.

In the 20th Century, some notables who bought insurance from The Hartford: Babe Ruth and President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Today, it's a company that has been named as one of the world's most ethical companies eight times since 2008, by the Ethisphere Institute, a nonprofit that specializes in advancing the standards of ethical business practices.
