Health care reform: Stay on your parents health plan until age 26

If you have a child under age 26 who needs health insurance coverage, under the Affordable Care Act that "kid" can now be added to or kept on your plan, even if they are married, living somewhere else, attending school or financially independent.

The exception: If you have a group health plan and your child is eligible for a group plan at their own workplace.

These young adults must be offered the same health benefits that they were eligible for as minor dependents, and for the same price as dependent coverage. If they are married, their spouses and children cannot receive this coverage.
