Aerosol cans

aerosol can

Common aerosol spray cans, which are used for everything from lubricants to paint, can explode under certain conditions, says Papa. Most people have collections of such cans under sinks, in hall closets, in basements and on garage shelves. If you store them in a room that catches fire, they may ignite and fuel the blaze.

"You can have a small fire in your garage, and once those cans begin to burn they can blow and they shoot out," he says. "It causes the fire to spread."

The solution is to properly dispose of all unused aerosol cans. "The more you accumulate in your home, the more susceptible [to explosions] you are."

Burr says an overheated aerosol can could "take off like a rocket ship."
