What do mushrooms, macadamia nuts and chocolate have in common?

They're among 20 ordinary foods that most frequently make pets sick, according to a review of veterinary insurance claims by Embrace Pet Insurance in Beachwood, Ohio.

The company examined its database of claims in recognition of National Poison Prevention Week, March 18-24. A variety of favorite human foods aren't good for pets, especially when consumed in large quantities.

The top 20 foods leading to pet poisoning claims were:

  1. Chocolate
  2. Raisins
  3. Mushrooms
  4. Xylitol (a sweetener)
  5. Grapes
  6. Vitamins
  7. Gum
  8. Bones
  9. Chicken
  10. Macadamia nuts
  11. Sugar
  12. Bread
  13. Cake
  14. Coffee
  15. Corn cobs
  16. Dough
  17. Meat
  18. Rawhide
  19. Salmon
  20. Avocado

Pet poisoning can cause gastrointestinal and neurological problems, cardiac and respiratory distress, coma and even death. Symptoms depend on the item and the quantity ingested or inhaled by the pet.
