Buddy Valastro, star of the TLC reality TV program, "Cake Boss," is spreading the word about the importance of life insurance, as spokesperson for the LIFE Foundation's Life Insurance Awareness Month campaign.
Throughout September he is sharing his family's story in public service announcements and in videos on the foundation's Facebook fan page and website.
Valastro runs his family bakery, Carlo's Bake Shop, in Hoboken, N.J. "Cake Boss" follows family drama and the making of unique custom cakes.
Velastro was 17 when his father died of lung cancer at the age of 54, just three weeks after he was diagnosed with the disease. To keep the family business afloat, the young Velastro dropped out of high school and worked 12- to 18-hour days, six days a week.
"If there had been life insurance, I know things would have been a lot easier. I could have hired more people, worried less and had time to grieve," he said in a foundation press release.
Valastro bought life insurance when his first child was born and has increased his coverage as his family and business have grown.
As part of the public-awareness campaign the LIFE Foundation is offering new educational materials on its website.
