Veterinary Pet Insurance Co. is asking the public to name this year's winner of the VPI Hambone Award, which honors the pet with the most unusual insurance claim of the year.
VPI reviewed more than 1 million pet insurance claims filed in the past 12 months and nominated 11 pets for the fifth annual award. The honor is named for an insured dog that got stuck in a refrigerator and ate a Thanksgiving ham while waiting to be rescued. Someone eventually found him, along with the licked-clean ham bone. The dog was treated for a mild case of hypothermia.
This year, the animal hospital that treated the award winner will receive a $10,000 VPI-funded award through the Veterinary Care Foundation to treat pets whose owners could not otherwise afford medical attention.
The 11 nominees include:
- A mixed-breed dog that survived a brawl with a buck
- A 48-pound dog treated for alcohol poisoning after eating two dozen uncooked bread dough rolls
- A cat that went through a full 35-minute washing machine cycle
- And a Labrador Retriever that crashed into a fence after getting broadsided by a goat.
All 11 nominees and their stories are listed at VPIHamboneAward.com. Voting is open through Oct. 11.
