Packed shopping mall parking lots and the hustle and bustle of the holiday shopping season are ripe conditions for savvy car thieves, warns Help Eliminate Auto Thefts (H.E.A.T.), a Michigan auto-theft prevention program funded by car insurance companies.
Cars filled with packages are easy targets for vehicle break-ins, the organization says. To prevent break-ins, H.E.A.T. encourages consumers to park in well-lit, high-traffic areas, lock valuables out of sight in the trunk and stay observant of their surroundings.
"The holidays are a joyous time of year filled with family gatherings and gift giving," Terri Miller, director of H.E.A.T., said in a press statement. "But, with overflowing parking lots and vehicles filled to the brim with purchases, the holidays are also a dream for car thieves."
Theft of a car is covered under comprehensive car insurance. Personal belongings stolen from inside the car are covered under renters or home insurance.
