Sixty percent of Americans say they would rather spend a night in jail than go without job benefits and perks, according to a recent survey by Ask.com.
Health insurance ranks as the most important job benefit, with 77 percent of survey respondents saying it factors into their employment decisions. Other benefits that top the list, from more to less important, include:
- 401k or other retirement account matching
- Paid time off
- Life insurance
- Ease of commute and proximity to transportation
- Stock options
- Tuition assistance
Unlimited vacation time, not surprisingly, appeals to many. Sixty-nine percent say unlimited paid time off would sway them toward joining or staying with a company. The concept has caught on with such employers as Netflix, Zynga and Ask.com.
A job with a clothing allowance is a draw for 26 percent of survey respondents -- favored slightly more than onsite child care or a child care subsidy.
Young adults ages 18 to 34 are more likely to want such perks as nap rooms, free dry cleaning and personal shoppers than adults 35 and older.
