Prudential Insurance agrees to $35 million fine.
Earlier in July, the Prudential Insurance Co. of America agreed to pay the largest fine ever imposed on a U.S. insurer following a 30-state task force report that alleged the Newark company's life insurance agents used deceptive sales practices. Consumer refund details will be determined in the coming weeks. An executive summary of the task force's 230-page report may be found at the Web site of the New Jersey Insurance Dept., whose commissioner, Elizabeth Randall, headed the probe. On its Web site, Prudential published a company statement and a letter from its chairman.
