Ask the Life Insurance Expert
What is "common" practice when designating life insurance beneficiaries when you have adult children from a previous marriage?
Your answer will likely be in your own instincts. Life insurance is often used as a way to financially support family members after your death. Are there children who rely on your financial support more than others, and who have greater need for the money?
On the other hand, maybe dividing the money equally among your children would reduce fighting after your demise.
Whatever you decide to do, the most important thing is to give all your beneficiaries your policy information (insurance company and policy number) so that they can make their claims. Too often beneficiaries are unable to make claims because they don't know which insurer holds the life insurance policy.
