Ask the Life Insurance Expert

My father passed I am the beneficiary on the life insurance policy. After the funeral expenses have been paid, is the remaining amount mine to keep. Even though he said that he wanted to divide it among the nine children.

If you are the sole beneficiary listed on the policy then yes, you can keep the remaining amount.

But is it worth going against the wishes of your late father? Surely every holiday will be hellish from now on if your siblings think you gypped them out of money. That’s a lot of people to have holding a grudge against you -- siblings, spouses, nieces, nephews.
