We purchased term life insurance on my husband in 2003. We also purchased a 'Dependent's Term Rider' on me at the same time. My husband just passed in 2/2013. I understand that I no longer have life insurance because the rider is no longer in force with the death of my husband as he was the primary policyholder. What happens to the premiums we paid on the rider policy for the past 10 years? Am I due any refund?

Sorry to say, no. In the view of the life insurance company, you paid to keep the coverage in force during those 10 years, so there’s no refund.

The same philosophy applies to a regular term life policy – if you don’t use it, there’s no refund because you paid to have the safety net.
