Aviva Life Insurance began its existence in the United States in 1810 as American of Philadelphia. That firm later became part of the Commercial Union Assurance Company.

During its early years, the company primarily offered fire, tornado and marine insurance. In addition, the firm underwent a number of acquisitions and name changes and eventually became known as General Accident.

General Accident changed its name to AmerUs Group Co before being acquired by the UK’s Aviva insurance company in 2007. The company changed names to Aviva Life and Annuity Company. Then, in 2013, the firm was acquired by Athene Holding.

Nearly a million U.S. customers are served by the more than 25,000 Aviva agents. As its name implies, Aviva specializes in annuities and life insurance products, and the company has been ranked second in the industry in terms of U.S. sales for indexed annuities and indexed life insurance.

The U.S. headquarters of Aviva Life and Annuity Company are located in West Des Moines, Iowa.
