You're walking outdoors and hear gunshots
Whether you are in a rural or urban setting, if you hear gunshots you should immediately take cover until you determine what is happening. If there is no cover, fall to the ground. If the shots are in the distance and pose no immediate threat, "turn around and go the other way," advises Coyne.
If you think the shooters are hunters, he recommends calling out with "a high-pitched whoop" to make yourself known. If are you in an urban area and believe that shots have been fired in anger, do not draw attention to yourself. If you leave the area, take care not to put yourself in the line of fire, warns John Gookin of Wyoming's National Outdoor Leadership School.
