Anthem BCBS health insurance
Anthem is the name given to a group of Blue Cross Blue Shield affiliates operating in 14 states across the nation. The affiliates operate as a part of the larger WellPoint Inc. which was created in 2004 with the merger of WellPoint Health Networks Inc. and Anthem Inc.
The Anthem name dates back to 1944 and 1946 when Blue Cross of Indiana and Blue Shield of Indiana were formed repectively. Those companies later designated themselves as Anthem. Meanwhile, WellPoint Health Networks was created by Blue Cross of California in 1992. Throughout the years, both Anthem and WellPoint merged with other BCBS affiliates until the two companies came together in 2004.
Today, Anthem BCBS companies operate in 14 states: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Missouri, Nevada, New York, New Hampshire, Ohio, Virginia and Wisconsin. While most of these companies use the Anthem name, some affiliates, such Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia do not.
Health insurance policies offered by Anthem BCBS vary by state, but individuals may be able to choose from the following types of plans:
- Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs)
- Health Maintenance Organization (HMOs)
- High deductible health insurance plans for use with Health Savings Accounts (HSAs)
- Point-of-Service plans (POS)
- Student health insurance plans
In many states, Anthem also provides vision, dental, life and Medicare coverage as well as manages flexible spending accounts offered through employers as a workplace benefit.
