How can I drop my insurance?

Jul. 13, 2007

Question:
My husband enrolled for health insurance at his place of work. I tried to drop my health insurance and they said I couldn't until open enrollment. How can I drop my insurance?

Ann, Alabama

Answer:
Dear Ann,

It may seem unfair, but group health insurance plans may indeed make you wait until the next open enrollment period before dropping your coverage. From your employer's standpoint, it is easier to make administrative changes that affect the company's payroll deductions during one limited time of the year, rather than all year long.

The only exception would be if you had a qualifying event such as a reduction of hours, job loss, birth of a child, or legal separation or divorce. You would then typically have only 30 to 60 days to notify the plan and file the necessary paperwork.
