A broad offering of health services and insurance

The Anthem name dates back to 1944 and 1946 when Blue Cross of Indiana and Blue Shield of Indiana were formed respectively. Those companies later designated themselves as Anthem. Meanwhile, WellPoint Health Networks was created by Blue Cross of California in 1992. Throughout the years, both Anthem and WellPoint merged with other BCBS affiliates until the two companies came together in 2004. In 2014, WellPoint, Inc. changed its name to Anthem, Inc.and has become one of the largest health benefits companies in the U.S.  

Along with many options for health care plans, the company provides a wide range of health products such dental and vision plans, behavioral health services, long-term care  insurance, flexible spending accounts, as well as life and disability insurance benefits.

Health insurance policies offered by Anthem BCBS vary by state, but individuals may be able to choose from the following types of plans:

• Health Maintenance Organization (HMOs)
• High-deductible health insurance plans for use with Health Savings Accounts (HSAs)

• Student health insurance plans

Along with a wide network of providers, Anthem has mobile access tools such as a LiveHealth Online feature, allowing members to talk to a doctor online at any time, and an Anthem Anywhere app which stores your member card and can help you locate providers in your network.
