The company began as Blue Cross of Massachusetts in 1937 and was the first organization to provide statewide coverage for hospital stays. In 1941, Blue Shield of Massachusetts was formed to cover physician visits. The two entities operated separately until they merged in 1988 to become Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts.
Today, the insurer provides more than just medical insurance for hospital and physician visits. It also offers life and disability insurance as well as dental plans.
Seniors can select from the company’s Medicare options, and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts is also a provider of group insurance to employers such as the federal government.
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts has 3,500 employees who work to serve the company’s 2.8 million members. The insurer reports it spent $12.8 billion on medical care in 2012 which meant 90 percent of the money it received in premiums went to health care services.
Its network of providers included 75 hospitals and more than 21,000 physicians as of 2013. The company headquarters is in Boston, Mass.
