Best Home Insurance Companies 2020: How Esurance Home Insurance Compares

Like the last few years, Esurance came in the top five for all rating factors in the 2020 Best Home Insurance Companies. Overall, Esurance placed 3rd with a score 88.64. Erie also ranked 3rd for claims servicing and ease of use for website and apps. Erie’s highest ranking was 2nd for value for price and lowest was 4th place for customer service. A high majority, 95%, said they would renew and 92% said they would recommend Esurance to others.

Gauging an insurance company

Before buying with a company it is wise to check on a company's financial strength and complaint record. The A.M. Best rating listed above gives you an idea of Esurance's financial strength to pay claims. A complaint ratio can be found on the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) site. The median complaint ratio from the NAIC is always 1.00. This means half of the insurers have a complaint ratio of under 1.00 and half have a ratio above. Basically, numbers lower than 1.00 are better with fewer complaints than the median and a number higher than 1.00 has more complaints than the median. For home insurance, Esurance (NAIC# 25712) had a complaint ratio of 2.10 for 2018. 2019 complaint numbers will be available in 2020.

Evolving the world of insurance

Esurance Insurance Services, Inc. started way back in 1999… Ok, so perhaps that isn't all that long ago, and the company has even come up with a tagline, to turn what could be seen as a deficit into a positive: Insurance for the Modern World.

Indeed, it is. Esurance started as an online car insurance company, with the idea that they would sell insurance online and make life easier for everyone. It was kind of a radical idea at the time. In 1999, the internet had been embraced by households across the world, but nonetheless, selling products online was a concept that was only a handful years old.

The company was modern in other ways, too. In 2004, Esurance started offering multi-car discount packages to same-sex couples, one of the first insurance companies to do so.

In 2011, Allstate purchased Esurance, and so for anyone who is worried about aligning themselves with a still-young company, Allstate has been around since 1931. Esurance is now, arguably, as solid and strong as any insurance company out there.

Consider Esurance if you're comfortable with technology and like fast claims

Esurance tends to get claims wrapped up within 10 days, but of course, what it's known for is being very modern insurance. If you spend a lot of time on your mobile phone, and you don't mind buying insurance online without talking to anyone, this is for you. That said, they have 24/7 customer service, and so it isn't as if they've completely forgone the old-fashioned touches.

Building codes. If your home is damaged and city ordinances or newer building codes require more expensive rebuilding than your homeowners insurance covers, you pay the difference in cost up to the limit you purchase.

Increased building structure. Extra dwelling protection for when your original coverage limits aren't enough.
