A West Coast original

Hawthorne K. Dent, an insurance executive, founded the General Insurance Company of America in Seattle, Washington, 1923.

His company quickly gained a reputation for competitive prices and solid customer service and grew steadily, soon being offered in states around the country. But as it sometimes happens, the name changed along the way. In the 1960s, General Insurance Company of America became Safeco, or Selective Auto and Fire Insurance Company of America.

And in 2008, Safeco really changed. It became a subsidiary of Liberty Mutual Insurance. It still retains its name, Safeco, but is part of the Liberty Mutual Insurance family. They focus solely on personal insurance, like home and auto.
