At $2,372 per year, full coverage car insurance in Pittsburgh is $45 more than the state average and $206 less than the national average. Travelers offers the lowest average rate at $1,970, but your actual premium depends on factors like your age, driving record, and coverage level.

Where you live plays a bigger role than most drivers expect. Insurers price risk by ZIP code, so local factors – traffic density, accident and theft rates, repair costs, weather, and the share of uninsured drivers on the road – all feed into what you pay in Pittsburgh. That’s why two drivers with identical records can pay very different rates depending on which side of a city line they live on.

Here’s how Pittsburgh’s average premium stacks up against Pennsylvania and national rates:

How can drivers save on insurance in Pittsburgh?

  • Drivers in Pittsburgh pay higher than, compared to the state average for car insurance.
  • Compare quotes from several insurers to find the best rate.
  • Bundle policies, like home and auto, for a discount.
  • Ask about safe driver rewards for a clean driving record.
  • Look into low-mileage discounts if you don’t drive often.

How much car insurance do you need in Pittsburgh?

Every driver in Pittsburgh needs at least liability coverage, but full coverage offers better protection because it covers your own car too, not just the other driver’s.

Liability only covers damage you cause to others. If your car is damaged in an accident, stolen, or hit by a falling tree, you’re on the hook for the cost without full coverage. Here’s what each coverage level costs per year and what it includes:

  • State minimum coverage: $471 per year – Limits of $25,000 bodily injury per person, $50,000 total bodily injury per accident, $25,000 property damage. The lowest coverage level allowed by law.
  • Liability only coverage: $614 per year – Limits of $50,000 bodily injury per person, $100,000 total bodily injury per accident, $50,000 property damage. Pays for others’ injuries and property damage when you’re at fault but doesn’t cover your own vehicle.
  • Full coverage: $2,372 per year – Limits of $100,000 bodily injury per person, $300,000 total bodily injury per accident, $100,000 property damage. Combines liability with collision and comprehensive, so your own car is covered too.

Why consider more than the state minimum?

State minimum liability only protects other people, it doesn’t pay for your own car. If you’re at fault in an accident, you’re covering your own repairs out of pocket. Adding collision and comprehensive coverage fixes that – collision pays for accident damage regardless of fault, and comprehensive covers non-collision events like theft, vandalism, or weather. If you’re financing or leasing, your lender likely requires both anyway.

What are the cheapest car insurance companies in Pittsburgh?

Travelers offers the cheapest full coverage car insurance in Pittsburgh, averaging $1,970 per year, while Erie Insurance has the second-cheapest premium, averaging $1,983 per year. Rates are based on limits of $100,000 bodily injury per person, $300,000 per accident, and $100,000 property damage.

Rates differ by company because each insurer calculates risk differently. Comparing quotes from multiple providers is the best way to find a rate that fits your budget.

What does a full coverage policy include?

  • Liability: Pays for the other driver’s injuries and property damage if you’re at fault. It doesn’t cover your car or your medical bills.
  • Collision: Pays to repair or replace your car after an accident, regardless of fault. Required if you’re financing or leasing your car.
  • Comprehensive: Pays for damage to your car from non-collision events, like theft, fire, or weather. Often bundled with collision coverage rather than sold on its own.

Do men or women pay more for car insurance in Pittsburgh?

Male drivers in Pittsburgh average $2,372 per year for full coverage car insurance, which is same as female drivers at $2,372 per year.

Insurers in most states use gender as a rating factor. California, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Michigan, Montana, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania block this practice.

The Insurance Information Institute (Triple-I), a nonprofit that researches insurance trends, reports that women are involved in fewer serious accidents than men. Insurers price that risk difference into premiums, which is why men pay more for car insurance.
