The company was founded in 1810 as a fire insurance company when a group of local merchants gathered in a Hartford Inn and founded the Hartford Fire Insurance Company. Fifteen years later, The Hartford wrote the first insurance policy for an institution of higher education when they insured Yale University.
In 1835, a major fire hit the New York City Financial District. The president and directors of The Hartford had to pledge their personal fortunes to pay for claims, but the company survived and managed to pay all claims while other insurers went bankrupt.
In 1913, as automobiles become more popular The Hartford formed their Accident and Indemnity Company which provided improved protection for automobiles and property from risks like fire, accidents, liability and more.
The Hartford established a Junior Fire Marshal® program in 1947 which has been teaching fire prevention and safety to millions of children. In 1984, The Hartford became the exclusive provider of Home and Auto insurance for AARP members and that has become a major component of their business.
