How much you pay for car insurance depends on your driving profile and where you live, but almost anyone can pay less by comparing quotes from several insurers, keeping a clean driving record, and claiming every discount they qualify for. Beyond those, a few patterns hold across the board.

Travelers consistently posts some of the lowest rates overall, even for drivers with a speeding ticket, at-fault accident, or DUI on their record. Younger drivers pay far more than anyone else, though good student discounts and choosing the right car can take some of the sting out. And no matter your situation, a clean driving record is the most reliable way to keep your premium down over time.

How to lower your car insurance premium

  • Compare quotes from at least three insurers. Rates for the same driver can vary significantly between companies, so shopping around is one of the easiest ways to save
  • Choose the right coverage. Make sure your liability limits and deductible match your actual needs, not just the state minimum or a default option
  • Maintain a clean driving record. Avoiding tickets and accidents keeps your premium from creeping up over time
  • Use all your available discounts. Ask your insurer about every discount you qualify for, from good student to multi-policy to telematics programs

Which car insurance companies offer the cheapest rates overall?

USAA and Travelers offer some of the cheapest full-coverage car insurance rates overall, averaging $1,628 and $1,962 a year. USAA’s rates are hard to beat, but the insurer only offers policies to military members, veterans, and their families. Among insurers open to the general public, Travelers and GEICO stand out, with GEICO averaging $2,159 a year.

The table below shows each company’s average annual premium for full coverage, based on 100/300/100 liability limits and a $500 deductible.

Is the cheapest car insurance company always the best choice?

The cheapest car insurance isn’t always the best deal, because price is only useful when you’re comparing the same coverage and factoring in how the company handles claims. A low premium loses its value fast if the policy leaves you underinsured or the insurer is slow to pay.

“The most important thing to consider here is making sure you’re looking at equivalent coverages offered between the different providers,” cautioned Benjamin Bruinekool, principal at the Western Michigan Insurance Agency.

Keep in mind that cost shouldn’t be the only determining factor to consider when shopping for a policy. How responsive a company is and the level of service it provides when you have a claim are critical.

Service matters just as much once you actually file a claim. How responsive a company is, and how well it handles a claim when you’re relying on it, can outweigh a small difference in premium.

“If the consumer is happy with their current provider when it comes to customer service and claims handling, then I would not advise switching for savings less than 15%,” said Bruinekool.

Cheapest car insurance companies by state

Cheapest car insurance companies by driving record

Across speeding tickets, at-fault accidents, and DUI convictions, Travelers consistently comes out as one of the cheapest options for high-risk drivers. Rates still vary by violation type and insurer, so make sure to compare quotes from multiple insurance companies.

Which insurers offer the cheapest rates after a speeding ticket?

Travelers, USAA, and GEICO offer the lowest average rates for drivers with a speeding ticket on their record. A speeding violation usually bumps up your premium, but the size of that increase varies by insurer.

Which insurers offer the cheapest rates after a DUI conviction?

A DUI conviction can more than double your premium, but Travelers, USAA, and Progressive tend to offer the lowest average rates of the insurers we analyzed. Because no two insurers penalize a DUI the same way, comparing quotes after a conviction is one of the few ways to claw back real savings.

Which insurers offer the cheapest rates after an at-fault accident?

Drivers with an at-fault accident generally face higher premiums, but Travelers, USAA, and State Farm offer the lowest average rates after a crash. Accident surcharges vary considerably by insurer, so comparing quotes at renewal can help you find more affordable coverage.

How can young drivers find affordable car insurance?

Young drivers pay significantly more for car insurance than any other age group, with teens averaging $8,045 a year, more than three times what adults pay. That’s because insurers see less-experienced drivers as statistically more likely to be in an accident, so they charge higher premiums to offset that risk.

Rates drop steadily as drivers gain experience. By the time drivers reach their mid-20s, premiums fall by roughly half, and they continue declining into adulthood as a clean driving record builds up.

Age groupAverage annual premium
Teens (16–19)$8,045
Young adults (20–24)$4,051
Adults (25–60)$2,575
Seniors (65–75)$2,531

How young drivers can lower their premiums

  • Stay on a parent’s policy. Being added to a parent or guardian’s existing policy is almost always cheaper than buying a separate one.
  • Ask about good student discounts. Many insurers offer a discount for students who maintain a B grade.
  • Take a defensive driving course. Completing an approved course can qualify young drivers for a discount in many states.
  • Choose a safer, cheaper car. Insurance costs are also based on the vehicle itself, so a car with strong safety ratings and a lower repair cost can help offset high-risk pricing.
  • Maintain a clean driving record. Avoiding tickets and accidents is the fastest way for a young driver’s rate to come down over time.
  • Compare quotes across insurers. Rates for young drivers vary a lot by company, so shopping around can lead to meaningful savings.

Choose the right first car

The year, make, and model of a car plays a big role in determining premiums. Since coverage for teens and young adults is already expensive, it’s worth avoiding cars with higher premiums. Luxury and exotic cars can come with sky-high rates, while cars like the Honda CR-V have some of the lowest premiums.

What car insurance discounts can lower your premium?

Good student, anti-theft, bundling and telematics discounts are the most popular ones to lower your premium with, but depending on your profession or payment method — you could be eligible for even more discounts.

“Ask about any discounts that are available, not just what they have applied,” advises Bruinekool. “Oftentimes, there are discounts you qualify for that were not applied because the information did not come up [initially].”

Common discounts include:

  • Good student discounts: High school and college students who maintain a B grade or better may qualify for a lower premium
  • Anti-theft discounts: Installing anti-theft devices or a security system can earn you a discount, since they lower the risk of theft
  • Multi-policy discounts: Bundling auto insurance with homeowners, renters, or other policies from the same company can significantly cut costs
  • Telematics discounts: Many insurers offer programs that track your driving habits through an app or device, rewarding safe drivers with substantial savings

Q: Why it’s important to shop around for car insurance coverage

The most important thing to consider here is making sure you're looking at equivalent coverages offered between the different providers.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the best way to compare car insurance rates?

Get quotes from multiple insurance companies to compare rates effectively. Generally, it’s easiest to use a tool, like the one available through Insure, to gather quotes from multiple companies quickly.

Is there any disadvantage to choosing the cheapest insurance?

Although the cheapest insurance policy might suit your budget, it might not offer enough financial protection. Make sure to get the coverage you need in a policy.

How to get the best deal on car insurance

“To find the cheapest car insurance, start by maintaining a good driving record, which is crucial as accidents or violations can significantly increase premiums. Also, consider increasing your deductible and bundling auto with another policy for potential savings,” says Christian Strange, owner of Strange Insurance Agency.

“Beyond cost, check the insurer’s reliability in claims handling. I’ve seen cases where cheaper policies led to frustrations due to poor service,” he says. “To truly safeguard your interests, understand the policy’s details, especially the liability limits. This ensures you’re covered against significant financial loss.”

Methodology

The rates are based on the sample profile of a 40-year-old male and female driver for different coverage limits.

  • Full coverage policy with limits 100/300/100 and a $500 coll/comp deductible.
  • A liability-only policy with limits 50/100/50.
  • Minimum liability policy with state-specific limits.

We have gathered data based on different driving profiles, including-

  • Teen drivers (Age: 16-19)
  • Senior drivers (Age: 65-75)
  • Drivers with a DUI
  • Drivers with a speeding ticket
  • Drivers with an at-fault accident on their record.
